The Feast of Fogaceiras (Municipal Holiday), celebrated on January 20, originated in 1505, when the country was plagued by the plague. The Flanders appealed to Martyr San Sebastian to end the slaughter, promising to hold an annual feast, whose “vote” would be Fogaça (sweet and traditional bread).

The martyr’s vow of San Sebastián has been celebrated since the sixteenth century, maintaining to this day the essential features: Procession of the House to the Mother Church, Blessing of Fogaças, celebration of the Solemn Mass with a sermon in the Mother Church, as well as a Procession during the afternoon. In this festivity there is a great highlight for the Fogaceiras – girls dressed in white, girded with ribbons in the colors, that take the fogaças to the head. Five girls from different backgrounds (countries and ethnicities), attending EB1 schools, were the face of this year’s edition, representing the intercultural reality of the County. In order to elaborate this idea, the following phases of work were carried out: preparatory contacts with the parents of immigrant children; contact and articulation with the teachers of the children; referral of the children to the Office of Communication and Public Relations of the Municipality of Santa Maria da Feira; photographic session; production of the communication materials with the photographs of the selected children. The children come from different countries and ethnic groups, between the ages of eight and ten. Approximately 6,000 Euros were invested and this project began in November 2007. This initiative made for the first time, children of immigrant daughters participating in the Festa das Fogaceiras. Causing a strong impact on the community of Feirense, awakening it once again to the intercultural reality existing in the Municipality. The children come from different countries and ethnic groups, between the ages of eight and ten. Approximately 6,000 Euros were invested and this project began in November 2007.
